RACING TO PROTECT CLEAN WATER

Talladega County Groundwater Festival

May 18, 2006

This letter is to inform you of a new program started in Talladega County. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management in cooperation with several utilities, school boards and organizations in Talladega County are planning for the first Talladega County Groundwater Festival to be held in May 2006. The purpose of this event is to educate children about all aspects of water and other related natural resources and to instill in them a general environmental awareness and stewardship ethic. The students will learn the importance of water to all life, the water cycle and groundwater’s role in it, the interdependence of plants, trees, wildlife, soil and water, and the effect of human actions on water and all nature and the need for responsible action. All of the activities meet the Course of Study and SAT Objectives for the 4th Grade Scientific Skills. There are currently 23 counties in the State hosting Groundwater Festivals.

The Ground Water Festival is a free, one-day event where 4th grade students participate in hands-on learning activities focusing on water education. The day is designed to be a fun educational experience and is made possible by volunteers and donations from local sponsors. The festival is for all 4th grade level teachers and their students from the Talladega County, Sylacauga and Talladega school systems. There will be two sessions, the first session is from 9 am to 11:45 am and the second session is from 10:50 – 1:45 pm. Each school will attend one session. Every student and teacher attending will receive a free Water Festival T-shirt and each teacher will receive educational materials. We will have a logo design contest with the winning logo appearing on the T-shirts. The student with the winning logo and his/her teacher will both receive $50 gift certificate or savings band. Rules for the contest will be distributed in early January.
