The Mobile County Soil and Water Conservation
District held its first Water Festival on Thursday,
May 7th, 2009 at Christ United Methodist
Church. Approximately 200 4th grade
students from Collier Elementary and St. Mary’s
Catholic School participated. Students visited
three stations – Water Cycle, Filtration, and
Watersheds. The stations concluded with a Fishin’
Magicians magic show.
Students from Baker High School assisted with the
day’s activities.
Because the Mobile County Public School System
(MCPSS) is the 19th largest school system
in the nation, the Mobile Co. SWCD chose to hold its
first Festival with a small number of students.
Officials from the MCPSS were in attendance and very
supportive of expanding next year’s event! The
birth of a successful partnership!
In addition to the Mobile Co. SWCD, funding made
possible through Gulf Coast Resource Conservation
and Development, Mobile Area Water and Sewer System,
and Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
Other sponsors included Alabama Cooperative
Extension System, Coastal Alabama Clean Water
Partnership, Alabama Coastal Foundation, USDA-Farm
Service Agency, and USDA-Natural Resources
Conservation Service. |
